POVOS ORIGINÁRIOS
02
"POVOS ORIGINÁRIOS" textile series was created based on my research about the originary people material culture in Brazil, which took place at the Indigenous Museum (Museu do Indio, 1992), Rio de Janeiro. At that time, my perception about the harmonious relation between man and his environment, expressed through their artifacts, their housing objects, and accessories, motivated me to compose the six textile panels for the graduation project at Shenkar College of Engineering and Design, Israel (1993).
I used several textile’ techniques to create this series: felting, tie and dye, industrial and handknitting machines, and others. The six panels are: “TABA”, “COBRA CORAL”, “LÍBER”, “PINTURA CORPORAL”, “GRAFISMOS” and “EXTINTO”.
This Project was chosen to participate of the exhibition "Textile Art - Matter & Spirit" (1993, Kiryat Tivon, Israel), as one of the selected graduated students from Shenkar of that year.
It is worth mentioning that, almost 30 years after developing this project, I decided to change the name of this series from "THE LAST TRIBE" ("A ÚLTIMA TRIBO") to "POVOS ORIGINÁRIOS", as far the term "tribe" is not considered respectful to relate to the originary people.
